There is a wealth of language, archaeology, history, folklore, nature and music in Gleann Cholm Cille. This brand-new course, delivered entirely outdoors, will give you the opportunity to sample all of these aspects of our unique heritage while also practising your spoken Irish.

The course caters to the demand for outdoor cultural activities which can be undertaken safely and in line with all current COVID-19 public health guidance. A mix of guided walks, presentations and demonstrations will be used to deliver the course. Boat and bike trips may also be provided, weather permitting.

While this is not a dedicated language course, Irish will be used throughout and skilled teachers will help you improve your fluency and conversational skills. Both beginners and advanced speakers are welcome and participants will be grouped appropriately to ensure they get the maximum benefit from the week.

The topics covered will include:

  • Flora, fauna and local habitats
  • The Irish dialect of Gleann Cholm Cille
  • Neolithic and early-Christian archaeology
  • The heritage of St Columba
  • Local folklore
  • Fishing and maritime traditions
  • The traditional music of southwest Donegal

This is not a hill walking course: the guided walks will not be strenuous but you must bring appropriate rain gear and comfortable shoes. In line with the current public health guidance, no parts of the course can be held indoors, even in the case of poor weather.
